The IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s, presented by Go Auto, is the largest fundraiser for the Alzheimer Society of B.C. The Walk provides an impactful way for British Columbians to celebrate and remember people in their lives who have been affected by dementia, while raising valuable funds and awareness to create change. Each year we honour someone within southern Vancouver Island who has been affected by dementia or who has valuably contributed to the lives of people living with the disease. This year, we honour Susan Jarvis. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Susan Jarvis has spent more than 50 years volunteering to support her community. And now, with her family facing dementia, it is her turn to accept the support. Susan and her husband Stan met in Ocean Falls in 1965. The couple would eventually settle down in Nanaimo to raise their two daughters.?Susan balanced the busy schedule of a full-time mom with that of a passionate volunteer. The beginning of their dementia journey, around 2010, was unexpected and painful. Although they weren’t sure what was happening, the family recognized that something was wrong. Though he was initially hesitant, Stan agreed to see a doctor, where testing showed Stan had experienced a series of ministrokes leading to vascular dementia. It was a heavy diagnosis, but with their family surrounding them, Stan and Susan were able to carry the weight and move forward. Get your family, friends and colleagues together and join us on Sunday, May 28 to help fund vital programs and services for people affected by dementia. Learn more at alzbc.org/walk-bc.
