The world-renown Avatar Grove, just 20 minutes from Port Renfrew, quickly became a major tourist destination once it was found and popularized in 2010. The Port Renfrew Chamber of Commerce, the Ancient Forest Alliance, First Nations and the community successfully lobbied to have the Grove protected from logging. The protected stand is home to breathtaking, gnarled, giants that are a short walk from the parking area. This innovative, collaborative project preserves a rare eco-sytem, is good for the local economy, and reminds all who visit of the beauty and inherent value of Vancouver Island's ancient forests.
Dan Hager, President of the Port Renfrew Chamber of Commerce and TJ Watt of the Ancient Forest Alliance will tell the story of Avatar Grove.
